Please read the Welcome to 2025 document, which contains important information about Steward duties and responsibilities, details about scheduling events, and other important changes for 2025.
Steward Expectations
Over the years we have developed a set of ground rules for being a steward we have always called Steward Responsibilities and Code of Conduct. We ask that you sign off on them yearly. We have merged this into Steward Expectations. If you haven’t read and signed off for this year please do so here: Steward Expectations Form
Work Day Scheduling/Advertising
To advertise an on-going workday, start by checking the Events section on our Facebook page. Pick a date that does not overlap with a mega work day if possible. Create an event on our Facebook page to advertise your workday. Facebook events will be advertised on our website and Instagram. Share the event on Facebook to your park’s page and to other relevant pages and groups. Please try to post your work day 2 weeks in advace. Each park should have a steward who has been appointed an editor on our Facebook page. If you need access email trailmanagement@trailpittsburgh.org
Feel free to email your contacts, but Ricky Houghton has set up an email and txt message BOT. Anyone who picks a park on the website volunteer contact form and submits their email or cell number will be added to the list for the park. Ricky’s BOT will take the data from the Facebook Event and send a work day announcement to the list for the park via email and text messages. Feel free to email contact information (emails and cell numbers) to ricky@trailpittsburgh.org and he can add them to the list for the park.
If you need help with any work day related tasks such as advertising, tools, food, planning contact our Trail Management Committee via email: trailmanagement@trailpittsburgh.org

Work Hours Workbooks
Tracking work hours is incredibly important to our organization, especially when applying for grants and seeking funding. Logging volunteer hours might just be the second most important aspect of our workdays, so please be diligent about doing so. Keeping track of our volunteer hours clearly illustrates the value of Trail Pittsburgh’s contribution to land managers. Make sure to track work hours using the workbook, which is linked below. Each park has its own tab in the workbook, making it easy to view total hours at a glance.
Ricky Houghton has set up a Trail Pgh SMS BOT to which you can send a text message with work hours and pictures of your trail work which the bot will then log into the Google Sheet. Easy to shoot a text message from the field during a work day with your hours and any pics and your work is documented!
Instructions are here: Doc – SMS Messenger – User Instructions
Liability Waivers
The most important task of Stewards hosting workdays is to ensure everyone signs a Trail Pittsburgh Liability Waiver. Also, get an email for each attendee. Take a picture of each signed page with your phone or scan and email to trailmanagement@trailpittsburgh.org.
