Short single track for biking and hiking just 10 miles outside of Pittsburgh.
There are three parks within the Borough of Oakmont that allow biking, Falling Springs, Dark Hollow Woods and Creekside Park.
The first one to allow mountain biking was Falling Springs. The property was given to the Borough to be used as a park in the early 2000s but not much was done with it until 2013 when trail construction started. Today there are approximately 1.5 miles of trails in Falling Springs. The trails at Falling Springs are meant to loop several times for fun and exercise.
The next park, Dark Hollow Woods, has a very rich history dating back to the 1950s when the land was gifted to the Borough of Oakmont by a private land owner and a railroad. Oakmont operated this as a foot traffic only park until 2021. Following a successful trial period, biking was allowed full time on all trails within the park. Today there are 3.5 miles of trails in the park with a few very fun “down-country” trails and incredible scenery.
Creekside Park was put into service in 2013 with ball fields and a flat gravel perimeter loop. In July 2021, a VeloSolutions asphalt pump track was installed. A pump track is a circuit of rollers, banked turns and features designed to be ridden completely by riders “pumping”— generating momentum by up and down body movements, instead of pedaling or pushing. This is the first VeloSolutions pump track in Western PA and is incredible fun and exercise.
